What factors cause Leaky Gut?

The state of your gut depends on several factors, one being your genetics. Some people have a genetic predisposition causing them to be more sensitive to changes that occur in the digestive system. However, a number of your lifestyle choices contribute to a leaky gut as well. For instance, the typical American diet, high sugar and saturated fat intake but low fiber, not only increases intestinal permeability but also produces systemic inflammation, or metabolic endotexemia. Other contributing factors to a leaky gut and inflammation include frequent alcohol consumption, accumulated stress, and consumption of foods you are sensitive to.

How is Leaky Gut healed?

To heal leaky gut and prevent the gut from allowing leakage of toxins through the gut lining, then it only makes sense to avoid common causes for the gut damage and built the damaged lining back up. This is done through a process known as ARC- avoidance, reflorastation, and cultivation.

1. Avoidance:

Eliminate any exposure that causes damage to the intestinal lining. Common exposures include Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen amongst many others. Other exposures include certain infections and foods you are allergic to. Alcohol consumption can also cause damage to the gut.

2. Reflorastation:

Avoid alcohol consumption as it can alter gut flora to deplete protective bacteria. This results in the increase of intestinal permeability and produces systematic inflammation. Taking probiotics may help to reduce symptoms of leaky gut, but it is different for individual. For some people, the best sources of probiotics include fermented foods, for others it may be a probiotic supplement.

3. Cultivation:

To fertilize or cultivate the garden of your gut, it is important to consume a diet rich in plant fiber. You can also include anti-inflammatory spices such as turmeric in your diet. Use supplements only when necessary, especially when there is a deficiency in your diet.
